New contenders in running for Limerick Hurling job

Tony Considine and Justin McCarthy (left) are among a list of 10 nominations for the Limerick senior hurling manager's post.

Former Clare boss Considine has been nominated by the Garryspillane club, while McCarthy, who was forced to step down as Waterford boss earlier this season, has been nominated by the Camogue Rovers club.

Outgoing manager Richie Bennis remains in the running for a reappointment after been nominated by his club Patrickswell.

The list of nominations was announced at a specially convened county board meeting.

Finnan to return to Irish squad

Liverpool defender and Limerick native Steve Finnan will make his return to Republic of Ireland duty against Norway as Wednesday as his club future remains in some doubt.

According to BBC Sport, Finnan has been persuaded to return to the Republic set-up by manager Giovanni Trapattoni after retiring from international football last year.

"When I met the manager, I liked what I heard, so I made that decision," said the Liverpool defender. Finnan acknowledged that his Liverpool future is in "limbo". The £3.5million signing from Fulham five summers ago, has found himself out of the picture so far this season after undergoing hernia surgery.

Limerick 37 Pre-season Preps 'Behind' Says Kerley

Limerick 37 manager Mike Kerley admits his preparations for the start of the eircom League of Ireland First Division season have not gone smoothly.

The Blues make the journey to Kingspan Century Park to take on Monaghan United in Friday night’s first game of the season. And Kerley, who replaced sacked Paul McGee during the winter, believes his squad are not fully tuned up for the big kick-off. He told the Limerick Leader: “No one, including myself, knew where they stood and up to last week I only had 12 players signed. This past weekend was the first time I had all 23 players together.”
